The ILLI bridges classical understandings with contemporary applications of Islamic law,
ensuring its relevance for today’s diverse Muslim communities.
The ILLI is a pioneering public education program designed to make the Islamic legal tradition accessible, practical, and relevant for Muslims. Led by Dr. Mariam Sheibani, this initiative equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to understand, apply, and contribute to a healthy and functional engagement with Islamic legal discourse in our personal and community lives.
With engaging courses, resources like essays, workbooks, and videos, and periodic in-person programs in North America, Malaysia, Spain, and Turkey, the ILLI bridges classical understandings with contemporary applications of Islamic law, ensuring its relevance for today’s diverse Muslim communities.
-
The ILLI complements the teaching of fiqh offered through many institutes by exploring Islamic Law's development, boundaries, and applications alongside broader aspects of Islamic legal institutions, customary practices, and their intersections with social, political, and moral domains.
Beyond complementing the existing fiqh-focused institutes, the ILLI addresses a critical gap in understanding Islamic law. Many in our communities lack foundational knowledge of how Islamic law historically functioned and its practical relevance to daily life, leading to reliance on distorted or overly rigid interpretations.
This initiative fills this void with tailored learning paths for everyday Muslims, professionals, and aspiring scholars-in-training, offering accessible, practical frameworks for engaging with Islamic law in modern contexts.
Islamic legal studies, particularly in the area of family law—marriage, divorce, and inheritance—remain underdeveloped, despite its direct impact on daily life.
This gap disproportionately affects women, who often face barriers in accessing meaningful and empowering legal knowledge. The ILLI bridges these divides, fostering informed, confident, and inclusive engagement with Islamic law for all.
The Approach
At the heart of the ILLI is a transformative online learning program with three learning journeys.
Learning Journey 1
Everyday Legal Foundations for Muslim Daily Life
This track is designed for individuals who want to deepen their understanding of Islamic law as it relates to their personal practice. It provides students with foundational knowledge to navigate questions about debated practices, legal history, and everyday challenges.

It focuses on practical application, offering tools, case studies, and frameworks to address real-world challenges in serving Muslim clients while remaining rooted in Islamic principles. Participants will gain the skills to bridge theoretical understandings of Islamic law with their professional fields, enhancing their ability to effectively serve their communities.
Learning Journey 3
Advanced Islamic Law for Religious Leaders
This track prepares aspiring Islamic scholars and religious leaders to understand how Islamic law adapted across diverse societies.
